Read at Sight

About and credits

A course written as books, engraved like books, and made to play.

The course

Read at Sight is a graded sight-reading course for adults learning the piano: Before You Begin, six volumes of short exercises and pieces, two books of repertoire and a Technique book. Each unit adds one or two new things, explains them in plain words, and gives you a lot of music that is just easy enough to read once. The course was finished as printed books first; this site lets you read and play it.

The exercises are generated to graded rules and checked; the pieces are original or public domain, and the repertoire comes from the Mutopia Project. Every score is engraved with LilyPond and plays back with its notes lit up. Open the course.

  • Piano sound: the Salamander Grand Piano by Alexander Holm, under CC BY 3.0.
  • Engraving: LilyPond, free software under the GPL. Its licence covers the program, not the scores it engraves.
  • Repertoire: the Mutopia Project, whose volunteers typeset public-domain music and share it freely. Every piece we took from it is listed below.
  • Type: Literata and Atkinson Hyperlegible Next, under the SIL Open Font License.

Free pieces, shared alike

16 pieces in Books 7A and 7B come from Mutopia engravings shared under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licence. They are free for everyone on this site, and our versions of them are shared under the same licence as their sources. They also appear, marked, in the printed books.

Sources and licences

Volumes 4-6 use the notes of these Mutopia engravings, retyped and often simplified; Books 7A and 7B reproduce them complete. The music itself is in the public domain; a licence below is the engraving's.
